Dizano News – Apple is holding an event in San Francisco at 18.00 BST this evening, where it is widely expected to announce its new iPad and iPad Mini devices. Follow the event as it happens here.
Latest
15.23: eMarketer expects there to be 11.8 million iPad users in the UK this year, representing 18.5% of the country’s total population or 59% of tablet users. Growth will continue to slow throughout the forecast period and by 2017, that share will fall to 40%.
15.16: There have been some rumours Apple could release a plastic iPad Mini in the same bright colours as the iPhone 5c, but that seems unlikely now, given the poor reception that the iPhone 5c has had. Last week it emerged that orders of the smartphone have been cut for the final three months of the year.
15.08: The iPad 5 is expected to come in the same colours as the iPhone 5s – that’s silver, gold and space grey. Gold has been by far the most popular iPhone 5s colour since the device launched on 20 September, according to reports, and was first to sell out at the Apple store on launch day.
These pictures of gold iPad cases were leaked to Chinese social networking site Weibo in August:
15.00: Telegraph technology editor Matt Warman says the pressure is on Apple to wow customers at tonight’s event, if it is to maintain its image as an innovator:
Apple needs these new devices to preserve the momentum that means every Christmas is now a “tablet Christmas”, in which, for instance, John Lewis predicts it will sell a tablet every 15 seconds.
But it needs users who are still delighted with their original iPads, and who have benefited from free software updates, to feel as though they are missing out on something seriously useful.
14.54: John Lewis has already predicted the iPad Mini will be its best selling tech product this Christmas, with tablet sales set to boom in the run up to December 25. The retailer predicted it will sell one tablet every fifteen seconds over the festive period as people look to upgrade old models.
14.50: Apple has a history of embedding clues that hint at what might be unveiled in its invitations. For example, the invitation to the iPhone 4S launch, where Siri was unveiled, had the tagline “Let’s talk iPhone”, and the event where the iPad 3 was launched carried the tagline: “We have something you really need to see. And touch”.
The invitation to the 22 October event features the tagline: “We still have a lot to cover”. While it is possible that there is no hidden message at all, the tagline suggests that new iPad covers may be in the offing.
14.41: Apple sent out this invitation to members of the media last week. Could there be a clue in the tagline as to what to expect?
14.35: As usual, rumours have been circulating for the last few weeks about the devices’ new features. We’re expecting the iPad Mini 2 to have a Retina screen, and both devices to have a faster processor, an upgraded rear camera, and Touch ID built into the home button.
14.30: Welcome to The Telegraph’s live blog of Apple’s San Francisco event, where Apple is expected to unveil its new iPads, as well as potentially some a new MacBook Pro and an updated desktop operating system, OS X Mavericks.
