How to Buy High Heels

Transforming a woman from frumpy to fabulous can be as simple as putting on a pair of high heels. They make your legs look long and lean, they enhance your calf muscles, and men love how women look in them. Buy some high heels, but know what you are looking for before making your final purchase.

Instructions

1 – Choose your outfit first. This way, you know what kind of high-heeled style and color to buy when at the shoe store. Aim to capture the same mood of the outfit in your heels.

2 – Try on several heel heights to determine what height is manageable for you. Look for a height somewhere between 2 and 4 inches.

3 - Determine the look you are trying to achieve. For example, if you are wearing a sleek, fitted miniskirt, match it with a sleek pair of pointy stiletto heels. Chunkier heels and wedges are good choices for more casual looks, and can be cute paired with jeans or a flowery cotton skirt.

4 – Buy a pair of high heels that you can walk in. Thicker, chunkier heels such as stacked heels tend to offer more support than skinnier, stiletto-style heels.

5 – Strap yourself into a beautiful pair of high-heeled sandals. Strappy sandal types, especially open-toe styles, are cute when you pair them with a sun dress or a summery skirt. Closed toes are very versatile, but look better with pants, suits and fall fashions. Peep-toe heels are both versatile for warm and cool weather.

Tips & Warnings

If you have nice legs and ankles, styles that include ankle straps can flatter.

When in doubt, try on the shoe and see how it looks. Some styles may be deceiving and your best bet is to simply try it on and see if it looks good on you.

Although some work atmospheres and certain occasions call for hosiery, do not combine hosiery with high-heeled sandals, especially if the hose has a toe seam. This just looks tacky. You should combine summery sandals with summery legs, which are bare and nylon-free.

If you have to wear hosiery, stick to closed toe pumps or peep-toe pumps so others don’t notice the toe seams.

Some pointy-toe heels fit best when you purchase them in a half size larger, because your feet thrust forward when you walk.

Don’t kill your feet for the sake of fashion. If you try on a pair of shoes that is so painful to walk in for the 30 seconds you are in the store, you most likely will end up with the heels off of your feet by the end of the night.

When wearing styles that expose your toes, make sure you manicure them. There is no sense in slapping on a hot pair of heels if your toenails look unkempt.
