Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the fourth race in a row, for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.

In wet conditions, Britain’s Paul di Resta appeared to be on target for the first pole of his career when he went out early and posted a time when the track was at its easiest.

But Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel all bettered Di Resta’s time before, finally, Hamilton put in the lap that beat everyone. It was the 31st pole of his career.

He will be joined on the front row by Vettel, and behind them are Webber and Rosberg, with Di Resta fifth. Jenson Button’s sixth was the best of his career.

Alonso finished top of Q1, and the fallers at the first hurdle were Pastor Maldonado, Jean-Eric Vergne, Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Gutiérrez and Charles Pic.

Bottom teams Marussia and Caterham made the bold decision to put their drivers on slick tyres and it paid off with both Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton – watched by brother Tom for the first time in his F1 career – making it into Q2, while Giedo Van Der Garde finished a surprising third. For the first time this season all four British drivers made it into Q2.

But in Q2 Chilton, Bianchi, Van Der Garde dropped out, along with Nico Hulkenberg, Adrian Sutil and McLaren’s Sergio Pérez.
