How to Make a Felt Petal Throw Pillow Cover

If you enjoy easy and fun craft projects, you’ll love the simplicity and elegance of this soft, felt throw pillow. In just a few minutes, you can personalize a basic throw pillow using felt flowers. The end result is a decorative home accessory that looks great and feels snug and comfortable.

Steps

Making the Felt Circles

Use a strong bottle cap to make circles on the felt. One off a juice bottle or a small jar would be ideal.

Draw the pattern. Place the bottle cap on the felt. Draw around the cap circle using tailor’s chalk or a fabric marker. You’ll get the first circle, then lift and repeat for the next one, alongside the first.

Make as many circles as needed to cover the pillow (this will depend on the size of your pillow).

Adding the Circles to the Pillow

Cut out the circles from the felt. It is a good idea to have more than you think you’ll need, just in case. Once cut, fold each circle in half, in readiness for adding to the pillow.

Keeping the felt pieces folded, either glue or stitch the felt pieces to the pillowcase. Start at one outer corner and work your way across, in rows. Place each folded circle next to each other, using the first petal as a support for the next one.

Gluing tends to be easier and faster but if you don’t mind sewing, stitching may prove more durable.

If gluing, beware glue drips, as these will show; wipe off immediately.

Continue until all of the circles have been added to the pillow cover or case. Once you’ve covered the whole pillow cover or case, it can be slipped back over the pillow and adjusted to sit properly.

Tips

You can decide whether to do both sides or just one side of the pillow cover or case. There isn’t much benefit to doing both sides though; a smooth back surface will ensure that the pillow sits back more neatly on a sofa.

If sewing, take care not to stitch through both sides of the cover or case.

Things You’ll Need

Felt in color of choice (match to your existing décor)

Bottle cap of decent width

Throw pillow

Glue suitable for fabric; or thread and needle or sewing machine if stitching

Tailor’s chalk or fabric marker (invisible markers are good, as the ink fades after a few days)
