Dizano News – Cadillac has just given European competitors such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz something to worry about. It’s called the Elmiraj, and it provides a glimpse into Cadillac’s future. From the looks of it, the future is really bright.
Cadillac chose to unveil the Elmiraj concept during the festivities surrounding the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for a reason. The annual event in the Monterey, Calif., area is a mecca for well-heeled car lovers.
In 2011, Cadillac unveiled the Ciel concept car in Monterey. This marks the second time in several years that Cadillac has made a big splash with a stunning concept car in an effort to command the attention of wealthy attendees who might not otherwise consider the brand.
Cadillac Elmiraj concept
What is it?
The Elmiraj is a 2-door concept car that showcases Cadillac’s future design direction. It was inspired by the large Caddys of the past, primarily the 1967 Cadillac Eldorado, but the concept also echoes the 1965 Coupe DeVille, the 1936 V16 Series 90 and even the current CTS-V coupe.
What’s hot?
Although the Elmiraj pays homage to the brand’s best attributes from the past, it stays current with Cadillac’s evolving Art & Design philosophy. Take the vertical headlights and taillights, for example. They hark back to classic Cadillacs, but without being overly retro.
Cadillac design director Mark Adams says the Elmiraj’s appeal lies in the simplicity of its styling. The Elmiraj is devoid of the copious creases, lines and details festooning so many cars today.
The engine is a new turbocharged V8, which Cadillac has under development. It has evolved from the twin-turbo V6 engine from the 2014 CTS VSport and delivers an estimated 500 horsepower.
What’s not?
At least for now, the Elmiraj is just a concept.
How much and when?
Adams says Cadillac will expand its lineup with new vehicles, but he neither confirmed nor denied whether a large coupe such as the Elmiraj is slated for production. Officially, Cadillac says the Elmiraj uses “chassis and structural elements of an ongoing Cadillac vehicle-development project slated for future production.” Clearly, the Elmiraj represents more than just a fantasy.
Dizano News Autos’ verdict?
Make this a production car already. It will be a hit. But even if the Elmiraj never becomes a reality, the pared-down design approach it introduces is sure to make any future Cadillac more appealing.
