If you’re in the process of replacing kitchen cabinets, you may be overwhelmed already. Your choices include dozens of different types of wood, stain color, finishes, hardware, and styles. And it’s not an isolated choice. Your cabinets need to match your kitchen’s theme, countertops, floors, backsplashes, walls, and appliances, and it all needs to work within your budget.
Kitchen cabinet selection isn’t as easy as simply picking your favorite cabinets. Cabinets tie the whole kitchen together, and can be its centerpiece, or conversely, blend into the background. No wonder finding the right cabinets is such a daunting task!
The following kitchen cabinet styles will give you an overview of your choices without overwhelming you. Organized by style, you may be able to combine some of the below ideas to help create the perfect kitchen.

Natural Wood Cabinets
Most kitchen cabinets are made from wood, but some look a lot more natural than others. Many employ the natural color of the wood, while others add color with a beautiful stain. Natural wood cabinets are rather the opposite of the crisp black and white cabinets that are trendy right now, but that doesn’t make them a bad choice for your kitchen.
The cabinets in this design from The Kitchen Studio of Glen Ellyn provide a natural look alongside the marble countertops and stone floor, breaking up the white and gray of the ceiling, countertops, and floors.

The sleek, modern cabinets in this Case Design kitchen have a glazed finish that makes them durable and easy to keep clean while still providing the natural look of wood.
Horizontal or Vertical Band
This modern style integrates the natural grain of the wood into the finish, and it adds a striped or banded effect to your cabinets that creates a hip and contemporary look. Sometimes this style is created by layering slabs of pre-stained wood together to make the bands and then slicing off pieces that are made into the cabinet faces and sides. Other times the natural grain of the wood is utilized to create the striped effect.
This design by Chelsea Atelier draws attention to the white marble slab countertops by blending the appliances and cabinetry.
The cabinets in this kitchen design by Murdock Solon Architects keep the room light with a natural finish and by combining banded wood cabinets with high-gloss white cabinets above the countertops for a seamless blend.
Cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling provide extra storage space inside the cabinets instead of on top and make the room look bigger. The unstained custom cabinets in this Case Design kitchen contrast and help break up the dark floors, countertops, and backsplash.
Black and White Cabinets Work Well in Modern Kitchens
Contemporary kitchens have a clean, uncluttered look that’s simple, sleek, and often industrial looking, so it’s no surprise that newer kitchens are increasingly black, white, and/or stainless steel. You won’t find many stainless steel cabinets, but a lot of stark white ones and an increasing number of black ones are making their way into new kitchens. The clean look of white seems like it would get dirty fast, but the high-gloss finish that many of these cabinets are sealed with provides a protective coating that’s as quick and easy to wipe down as it looks.
White cabinets contrast black countertops and combine with unstained white oak floors to create a light, bright, and clean look. Floor to ceiling drawers and cabinets create a lot of storage within a relatively small area in this kitchen by Aquidneck Properties

Antique Finish Creates Beautiful Look on These Kitchen Cabinets
An antique finish lends cabinets a classic look that never goes out of style. Depending on your other stylistic choices, this look can give a kitchen a rustic, old-fashioned, country, or Victorian appeal.
